Annotations for Hyper Chondriac Music

Lyric: You think I was scared, yeah, and you needed proof
Annotation:
This expresses the Deist god’s acknowledgement of humanity’s need for the proof of his existence. I’m not sure whether the “proof” referred to is proof of his existence or proof of his being scared. I’m not sure why God would be scared though, or how this fits in.

Lyric: You wanted more than I was worth
Annotation:
God seems to be telling us that we want more out of him than what he’s worth. Man has for many years believed in a God that loves them or punishes them and interferes with their lives, but this sentence is God telling us that we built the idea of him up in our heads, when really all he did was create the universe, and left it all to chance after that. I see no traditional God parallel here, but maybe that’s to symbolize the lack of existence of one, now we are just hearing from the Deist god.

Lyric: Who remains?
Annotation:
And this line finishes the parallel to the deist God. At the end of his creation when it’s all over, he checks to see who remains, not caring about what happened between creation and the end of everything.

Lyric: Who’s returned from the dead?
Annotation:
Here God challenges humanity by essentially saying “where are your miracles? You are incapable of returning from the dead”. This is the traditional God speaking again, then…

Lyric: This forgotten space race under my control
Annotation:
So I interpret this “forgotten space race” as the struggle of life to outgrow its surroundings, and the deist God has forgotten about it, he created it and left it alone, yet it is still “under my control”. God is still in control even if he doesn’t interfere, which makes no sense, again the Deist god vs the traditional God.

Lyric: Golden lies feed my role
Annotation:
Your golden lies, I’m going to go out on a limb here and say “you” is God referring to us as beings in the universe, in a deist sense, that is, a God that set the universe in motion and then let it go without interfering; however, man evolved and made his own conceptions of what God was. “The Golden Rule” I think is what Bellamy refers to when he talks about “Your Golden Lies”, “Do unto others as you would do unto yourself, and love God more than anything”. In other words, God is telling us that our conception of him is a lie. I think these lyrics reflect the conflict between the idea of a Deist god and a Christian or other more traditional God, and the only lie in the The Golden Rule is the Golden part, that is, the divine part, “love God more than anything”. I think Bellamy is trying to show that this love is not reciprocal, especially later on in the song. Onto the next few lines…

Lyric: Well, I don’t love you
 And I never did
 I don’t love you
 And I never will
Annotation:
At this part, Matt sounds in pain. The lines are said with a sort of forcefulness that suggests that perhaps he is shouting at this person in question, yelling at them as if he is in an argument. It’s as if he’s trying to convince both them and himself that he strongly believes what he’s saying, even if he might not actually.
